While out and about last night I took a poll and asked folks about the the least pleasant sounding words. I twittered the request and got more responses!
Here’s the list so far: slacks, lappy (slang for laptop), staycation, leverage, consumer, user, womb, moist, and webinar. Thanks to the folks who responded via Twitter! Feel free to add more hate-worthy words in the comments!
Some buddies and I used to do a similar informal poll. We found people seemed to agree that “moist” and “goiter” are the most unpleasant sounding words. We decided it was the “oi” that creates the bad sound.
signage. I have yet to hear any use of it where it couldn’t be replaced with “signs.”
Ok, “loins” is a horrible word too in the oi category.
Prosumer. *Shudder*
my friends and i spent a good while on this subject and we all settled on Moist and Gusset as words we hate.
My wife’s cousin was getting pretty fired up about “rural”. It’s one of the better words to write into somebody’s script. Somebody you don’t like, that is. Nobody sounds good saying it!
Concretize. Along with a hundred other words made up by adding -ize when the other couldn’t remember a better word.
