Adam Cecchetti wanted a chess set and he wanted it now. He got right to it and rapid prototyped one! He used inkscape to design it and a lasercutter to cut it out of acrylic.

I shared this with my DM students in DIG2000 here at UCF. We just studied the vector image format using Inkscape (I try to get them using open-source products whenever possible), so this seemed pretty timely!
I’ll also be having them watch History Hackers as one of their weekly reading/watching assignments to introduce them to the world of hacking/MAKEry. I hope it helps get History Hackers picked up!
