Bre Pettis | I Make Things

Things - Adam Mayer Explains The Teletype Model 15 from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Before the internet, people got their news over the wire by using the magical and mechanical powers of the teletype. Adam Mayer walks us through the workings of this Model 15 teletype he restored.

Adam recently went on a teletype tirade on twitter. Follow him at http://twitter.com/phooky to get interesting technical info about all sorts of things!

Here’s the iPhone compatible video and the luscious hd video!

If you’re in the NYC area and you’ve got a thing, I’ll come visit you and shoot a video! Just drop me an email. I’m only in town until the end of the month so if you’ve been thinking about it, now is the time!

Wow, so cool.

I’ve been trying to find a Teletype Model 14 tape printer in good condition to do much of the same thing!

The 5-bit Baudot (baw-DOUGH) code is still around, used by the deaf community in their standard TTYs. These teletype machines were donated to the deaf community as mainstream companies moved to ASCII, further isolating deaf users by consigning them to an obsolete protocol. Ironic, no? Nowadays these users are rapidly migrating to computer or wireless text, plus 2-way video for sign language.
