Things - Mike Gee Lazzzored a Tumbler Lock from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Mike Gee designed and prototyped an awesome lock that you can see right into because it’s made out of clear acrylic. When you turn the key you get a happy surprise!

You can find the plans on thingiverse if you’d like to make one!

You can watch in HD and here’s a file for the iPhone. You can subscribe in iTunes. Watch them all on Blip.tv, Vimeo, or Youtube.

Sidenote: I’ll have more videos from Europe soon, I have a lot to edit right now!

Things - Adam Mayer Digitally Designed Geared Business Cards from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Adam Mayer is a friend of mine and fellow resistor who may be the most prolific person I know. When he decides to do something, he commits totally. Check out one of his previous obsessions documented in the Things video series: the teletype.

Recently he got into gears and gearing and spun that interest into a rad project to make cards with planetary gears embedded in them.

He’s uploaded the plans for the geared card and the geared planetary card to thingiverse so you can make your own!

He’s sent me to Vienna with enough materials to make 15 business cards and I’m honored to have them! I can’t wait to put them together!

Adam may be the best kept secret on twitter. If you’re not following him, you should do so now. He’s at http://twitter.com/phooky.

You can watch in HD and for the iPhone. You can subscribe in iTunes. Watch them all on Blip.tv, Vimeo, or Youtube.

Rocket from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Earlier today I noticed that syvwlch, who took my class this weekend, had uploaded a new rocket thing to the thingiverse as another entry into Lazzzorbattle2008. I couldn’t help it, I had to make it. I slapped 12×12 of acrylic down on the laser cutter and POW it existed! Here’s his blog post about it.

This is a fun video, but for me, it doesn’t really count as a full video in my daily video series. I’ll have another one up before midnight! Here’s a video file! I have to link to the video file in the blogpost so that iTunes will find it and folks who subscribe in iTunes will be able to see it!

I’ve added even more laser

Things - Will Schenk Lazzzored a Dodecahedron from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

This weekend I taught classes on how to use the Epilog 35W lasercutter. Will Schenk made a wonderful Dodecahedron. Besides looking cool, it’s a puzzle!

I’ll be teaching another class this upcoming Saturday if you get inspired and you’re in the NYC area.

You can get the iphone video file by subscribing in itunes. Here’s the HD video file!

Things - Michael Gruen Lazzzored a Planetary Gear from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Michael Gruen came to my Lazzzor class this weekend and learned how to use the laser cutter. He then promptly figured out how to make gears in inkscape and put together this planetary gear within planetary gear design!

Here’s a iphone sized video file and an HD sized video file for your watching pleasure. Subscribe in iTunes to have them delivered automatically!

Things - Jennifer Whalen Animates a Horse from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

Jennifer Whalen wanted a horse that could walk around and so she went and found a Muybridge animation from the 1870’s and traced the shapes in inkscape to create a design. Then she lasercut the shapes and we used istopmotion to make them walk all over her… and a buffalo to walk all over Bre.

The wikipedia entry for Muybridge is very colorful and worth a read!

If you get the bug to make physical animations, you can start with these designs! Go download the horse and buffalo designs on thingiverse!

You can download a big hd file here or a smaller iphone sized file. If you subscribe in iTunes you can get the videos downloaded automatically!

I have added a second laser class!

Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Ornament

Sign Up For The Class!

If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for Saturday’s class, on Sunday, November 23nd, you can harness the power of an Eplilog 35 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this two hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. We’ll cover safety and basic design skills in Inkscape, the open source vector editor and you’ll learn how to do a burninate test to find out if something is laserable.

After learning the basics, each student will create their own design and lasercut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers 12″ x 12″ of 1/8″ acrylic and time on the laser cutter to cut and etch it. Bring a laptop if you’ve got one and design ideas for your own holiday decorations.

Even though this class doesn’t start insanely early, I will be providing bagels and cream cheese. Give me a heads up if you are a vegan and I’ll make sure to have some jam or tofu cream cheese!
