Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Ornament

Sign Up For The Class!

If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for Saturday’s class, on Sunday, November 23nd, you can harness the power of an Eplilog 35 Watt Laser! In this class you’ll learn everything you need to know to make the ideas in your head become a reality with a laser.

In this two hour class, we’ll walk through all the steps from idea to pressing the “go” button on the laser. We’ll cover safety and basic design skills in Inkscape, the open source vector editor and you’ll learn how to do a burninate test to find out if something is laserable.

After learning the basics, each student will create their own design and lasercut it on the laser! A $10 lab fee is included in the ticket price and covers 12″ x 12″ of 1/8″ acrylic and time on the laser cutter to cut and etch it. Bring a laptop if you’ve got one and design ideas for your own holiday decorations.

Even though this class doesn’t start insanely early, I will be providing bagels and cream cheese. Give me a heads up if you are a vegan and I’ll make sure to have some jam or tofu cream cheese!

Thingiverse is Now Alive! http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/11/17/thingiverse-is-now-alive/ http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/11/17/thingiverse-is-now-alive/#comments Mon, 17 Nov 2008 20:33:04 +0000 admin http://brepettis.com/blog/?p=1437 Thingiverse - Digital Designs for Physical Objects

For the last two weeks Thingiverse has been in stealth mode. Zach Hoeken and I schemed it up and he’s been coding like crazy to bring it to life. Invite your friends to the thingiverse and share the universe of things with folks you know!

Fred over at Creative Commons wrote up a very nice article about Thingiverse!

Thingiverse is an “object sharing” site that enables anyone to upload the schematics, designs, and images for their projects. Users can then download and reuse the work in their projects using their own laser cutters, 3D printers, and analog tools. Think of it as a Flickr for the Maker set.

Besides implementing our licenses, Bre and Zach have also gone the distance and allowed users to license works under the GNU GPL, LGPL, and BSD licenses, as well as allowing them to release works into the public domain. Thingiverse uses our license wrappers for each of these licenses thereby enabling automatic indexing by machines like search engines.

Pushing the envelope even further, Thingiverse also fully implements our RDFa specification (just take a look at the source of any page with a CC license to see RDFa in action) for expressing licensing and authorship information on the semantic web. This means that aside from telling machines that a work is licensed under CC, Thingiverse also tells machines the title of a work, its author, and other interesting semantic information.

If you’re looking for a fantastic example of how to implement the commons on a platform designed for sharing creativity, look no further than Thingiverse.

Thanks Fred! We’ll keep doing our best to make this a great place to share things!

Things - Nick Farr Created a Polyalphabetic Substitution Cypher Slide Rule from Bre Pettis on Vimeo.

You know when you had your notes taken from you by the teacher and read aloud in class? If you’d had one of Nick’s Polyalphabetic Substitution Cypher Slide Rules (PASCSR) you could have avoided that!

A Caesar cipher is any cipher where you shift the alphabet a certain number of letters. In WWII, they used slide rules like these to encrypt and decrypt what were called “One Time Pad” messages, where the key was a long random string of letters and numbers that told you how far to shift the alphabet to decrypt the message.

In this example, Nick used the Vigenere method, which is between the OTP (One-Time Password) and a Caesar cipher. The key is a fixed length (LOLCATS), and each letter of the key tells us where to shift our alphabet so we can decode the message. You can encode messages in the same way!

Nick is a founding member of HACDC, the hacker space in DC and I consider him to be the “Johnny Appleseed” of hacker spaces!

By subscribing in itunes, you can get all the videos delivered to you in an iPhone compatible format. Here’s the iphone video file or you can watch this HD file!

Today’s video also coincides with the launch of the Thingiverse. Zach Hoeken and I created a website where you can share your things. Check out Nick’s PASCSR plans on the Thingiverse. If you’ve got object files, I invite you to share them in the Thingiverse!

I normally embed the blip.tv flash video, but this video is a little fussy, I had it set to 60 frames a second which makes it record at 320×240 and so you get the youtube version of it. Single-Camera Stereoscopy from Kyle McDonald on Vimeo.

Kyle McDonald says, Leaving Termini in Rome, in 3D. Uses the parallel viewing technique en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy Recorded on a single camera at 25 fps, with the right side delayed by one frame. Assuming the train was going 40 k/h, each frame is about 44 cm apart — a bit more than the width of human eyes, but not significant enough to destroy the effect.

You can do this for yourself so long as you separate the left/right with a delay that creates about the width between the human eyes between perspectives. As a rule of thumb, at 30 fps, 1 frame is approximately the distance in centimeters of your speed in kilometers/hour (10 km/h / 30 fps = 9.2 cm).

I’ve done a few experiments with stereo photos back when i was doing pinhole stuff. Now I just need a video 3D viewer!

Bre’s Video Launching Checklist http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/11/03/video-launch-checklist/ http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/11/03/video-launch-checklist/#comments Mon, 03 Nov 2008 18:54:52 +0000 admin http://brepettis.com/blog/?p=1306 Once I’ve shot the video and edited it, it’s time to upload it and publish it. Here’s my publishing checklist!

  • Export a full resolution file from iMovie.
  • Open it in quicktime pro and watch it one last time so I know I haven’t missed any editing flaws.
  • Compress it by exporting an “appleTV” version of the video which gives me a nice M4V.
  • Upload that to Tube Mogul and then crosspost to Blip, Youtube, Howcast, Google, and Yahoo.
  • Manually upload to Vimeo and Facebook and Flickr since tubemogul crossposting doesn’t work for those. Also Tumblr!
  • Write the post on my blog to go with the video.
  • Grab the embed code and the video file permalink from blip.tv.
  • Publish it on my blog and twitter about the blogpost. Through the magic of the internet, the post automatically shows up on my soup and the twitter automatically shows up as facebook message.  I include a subscription link to iTunes. There are lots of ways to subscribe to my videos, but that one is the easiest for the most people.
  • I then try and tell a few friends about it when I’m done because I’ve just done a bunch of work and it’s nice to get some feedback. If you leave comments on my videos it makes me super happy.

So that’s my checklist. It takes a while! Let me know if you do anything different or have any questions about it or any ideas that I’m missing here!

Last night at midnight, my pals Phooky, X, Eric, and his brother Ian decided to build a robotic arm.

Eric and the Gripper

Phooky and Eric started working on the gripper, X started working on making the sanguino talk to 6 servos with an atari joystick, Ian did research and I started mocking parts up in Inkscape for the lasercutter. Our vision is to make a chess playing robot and when it’s done, we’ll publish all the files so you can make your own!

For all of November, I’m going to be producing a video for every weekday! I’m kicking it off early with this video about Raphael Abrams probe thing!

Raphael Abrams of teuthis is one of those people who doesn’t sit around daydreaming projects up, he just does them. He was recently featured in Wired magazine and is a forerunner in the open source hardware movement.

We were recently chatting about digitizing human bodies and making 3D bodyscans and Raphael jumped into action, created a file to make some lasercut parts. Together with his acrylic bits and a stepper motor and an arcade button he made this probe.

Stay tuned for a follow up episode when he finishes the coffin sized XY platform and starts digitizing humans at an amazing 1 DPI!

This is the first video in a series of videos that I’m calling “Things” I’m going to be putting out a Things video everyday in November! Subscribe in iTunes to stay up to date and have the show downloaded automatically in iTunes

History Hacker, the TV show I created with JWM Productions for History is going to re-air on Wednesday November 12 at Noon and 6PM. It’s on the History website and you can program it into your tivo.

Only 300,000 people watched it the first time around. With approximately 300,000,000 people in the USA, that meas that only 1/1000 of the population has seen it. I’d really like it if 1/100 of the population would see it!

If you missed it the first time around because of the presidential debates, this is your chance to watch it! Please pass the word on to friends!

You are also invited to join the History Hacker facebook group if you like!

Last time I live twittered commentary and I’ll be doing that again! Follow me on Twitter to get the behind the scenes details!

Matt Shlian: Paper Engineer http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/10/22/matt-shlian-paper-engineer/ http://brepettis.com/blog/2008/10/22/matt-shlian-paper-engineer/#comments Wed, 22 Oct 2008 20:47:04 +0000 admin http://brepettis.com/blog/?p=1224

I found Matt Shlian’s work while surfing Youtube. I’m a big fan of paper engineering and after seeing the way he makes paper move, I had to know more!

How did you get into paper engineering?

My studies in paper engineering began the way we often find our passion; it starts in the peripheral, something casually noticed and then slowly becomes central and soon the focal point of one’s the world. Nearly ten years ago at Alfred University, I occupied two studios: one in the printmaking department and the other in ceramics. However, I effectively managed not to make any traditional prints or ceramic work that year. Instead I focused on learning the art of paper engineering. I made large-scale digital prints then carefully worked them with cuts, scores, and creases to achieve a third dimension. The pieces would not become dynamic until the viewer chose to interact with them. The folds I was using, unknown to me at the time, were the building blocks of paper engineering. Right after I graduated I was hired as a “Paper Engineer” working in Essex Connecticut- I designed greeting cards, pop up book type ads, and all manner of movable paper whatnot.

What’s your process like from idea to execution?

My process is extremely varied from piece to piece. Often I start without a clear goal in mind, working within a series of limitations. For example on one piece I’ll only use curved folds, or make my lines this length or that angle etc. Other times I being with an idea for movement and try to achieve that shape or form somehow. Along the way something usually goes wrong and a mistake becomes more interesting than the original idea and I work with that instead. I’d say my starting point is curiosity; I have to make the work in order to understand it. If I can completely visualize my final result I have no reason to make it- I need to be surprised.

On the technical side I use all sorts of tools to make my work- copy paper, fox river corando acid free archival paper, PVA glue, #11 xacto knives, Autocad R13, and a Graphtec fc4200-50 Flatbed plotter cutter.

Who or what has been inspiring you lately?

I try not to look at people making work similar to mine. I am a sponge and won’t remember seeing something, and then think I came up with it a few months later. Instead I draw inspiration for unlikely sources; solar cell research, protein misfolding, Brian Eno, Matthew Goulish and Goat Island, Lothar Meggendorfer, Vojtech Kubasta, El-P, Daniel Libeskind, Thea Eck, Dondi White, Christian Marclay, Ren Weschler, Buckminster Fuller, George Hrycun, Stephan Sagmeister, Edward R. Tufte, etc.

Do you have any advice for people interested in learning more about paper mechanics?

I would recommend buying pop up books and dissecting them. I used to buy two copies of the same book and take one apart to figure out how it worked, the other I’d save as reference in case I couldn’t get the first back together. There are also a few great books on the basics of Paper engineering. The Pocket Paper Engineer and Elements Of Pop Up Those were two books I wish I had back when I was first learning.

Make sure to checkout Matt’s website, blog, and youtube channel to learn more!

I asked Twitter for some help and got an epic amount of responses.

If you don’t follow me on twitter, now’s a good time to sign up and join the conversation!

You can view Twitter search to follow along as the conversation continues!

bre I’m compiling a list of 10 things to do with your kid (or niece or nephew) that will make them smarter. What should go on that list?

ddrager @bre Reading Books, Taking them to the Zoo, Taking them to Museums, Travel to other places, discussing current events, spending time with tm
elcoqui121 @bre talk to them like they are adults
pjk @bre No baby talk. Talk to them like a normal person. It goes a long way.

jtoshua @bre goto museums, listen to lots of different music, play board games, read books, have conversations, answer questions with real answers
rockityroll @bre Read. Read. Read. Best thing you can do.
joshpaul @bre Really depends on age and what relation to “smart” you’re attempting to hit.
saxdiva @bre Take music lessons.
LiterateKnits @bre reading, libraries, museums, zoos, live music, crafts especially ones that have counting, algebra, etc, & stuff they find interesting
anwith1n @bre use an adult vocabulary to talk about age appropriate things. Encourage reading and inquiry. Allow them to puzzle through problems
ivynova @bre READ to them, play board games with them (especially chess), ask them what they think, introduce new things whenever possible, etc.
antimattar @bre legos, read, draw, make films, explain complex things as if they understand - don’t stop when you think they’ve lost you…
sstrudeau @bre things I wish I’d been taught more of, generally speaking: soldering/electronics, woodworking, bike fixing, gardening, sewing, cooking
schnaars: @bre teach them to play chess, oil and water (with food coloring), safe use of power tools,
mightyohm: @bre i’d visit your local science museum (more interactive = better, exploratorium is king!)
petrusalbus: @bre Take them out into nature and let them explore. Answer questions as best you can and look up answers you don’t know when you get home.
Ironmask: @bre One Word, Legos.
fernfiddlehead: @bre Are you being serious? If so, read to them, spend time with them, talk to them, love them.
creativedc: @bre shop at farmer’s market then cook with what you purchase

Wow, great responses! Thanks to everyone who is @bre - ing me. Now what is what is it that you wish you’d been taught more of as a kid?

openfly: @bre how to make fireworks, and robots, and robotic fireworks.
ddrager: @bre Social Skills! I had to learn them on my own later in life.
waxwing: @bre Take them geocaching; use the opp to talk about satellites, coordinates, etc.
rockityroll: @bre I wish I’d been taught more practical stuff - cooking, auto repair, banking
petrusalbus: @bre I wish I had been taught more languages as a kid.
Nickf4rr: @bre How to build a basic signal amplifier from (mostly) junk parts.
IanBrier: @bre Money, and how it works. Also the secret to fluffy mashed potatoes.
fynflood: @bre Math.
LeilaAnasazi: @bre I wish that as a kid I had learned more about what can really be done with mathematics, & how beautiful & multiple those languages are
airbrshldy: @bre That it’s okay to pursue the things that interest you most–if you do that, you will be more apt to succeed. Do not stifle kids dreams.
timkl: @bre Logical fallacies - that should’ve been on the top of the curriculum,
suecartwright: @bre recommend excellent books ‘how to make your child brilliant’ (bernadette tynan) and ‘how to have kick-ass ideas’ (chris barez-brown)
openfly @bre how to build a fortress of solitude.
openfly @bre homing pigeons.
johnbaichtal: @bre Electronics.
openfly: @bre nerf defense shield.
phraktyl: @bre Don’t limit them artifically. My son is admin on his own Mac. He asked me to teach him about the Terminal the other day. He’s 7.
amazenyou: @bre I wish I was taught to question things more often. That way you truly understand what you believe
themostbob: @bre - *HOW* to learn - how to study effectively, how to listen and take notes effectively. How to memorize.
bcrrll: @bre how to solve a rubix cube
suecartwright: @bre would love to share this with my niece and nephew - they love doing stuff and I get to boost my cool-aunti status - a sure winner!
tina_m: @bre Listen. Prompt them with questions that need descriptive answers, then let them talk, describe, explain :)
phraktyl: @bre I wish I’d learned life balance. All computers and no exercise isn’t balanced. Small changes then vs mammoth lifestyle change now.
malfunction54: @bre this may not be what you’re looking for, but how about: answering the question, “why?”
iwishiwas: @bre I wish I was taught to question things more often. That way you truly understand what you believe:.. http://tinyurl.com/4wguhz
natdefreitas: @bre soldering and sewing - the basics of making & fixing… i was lucky to be taught at home, but wish it was required study at school
Grifter801: @bre Read to them! Dear God read to them! Teach them to love and respect learning and everything else will be fine. BTW, nice new avatar.
handsomepanda: @bre Turn off the tv

neomojo: @bre Biggest thing to make a child smarter: first LISTEN to them, then help them to grow their best ideas.
bobtiki: @bre I was told *to* save my money, but not *how*. That probably would have been very useful, seeing how far in debt I am now.

Custom Lasercut Sunglasses, originally uploaded by bre pettis.

Sometimes I have to make something, ANYTHING. So I dug out some Optik Acrylic and lasercut it into a shape I like. Then I held it over a flaming torch until it became flexible and I bent it just right.

Want a piece of the action? If you’ve got a lasercutter, here is the svg file to make your own. (Released under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License.)

If you don’t have a lasercutter and you want to buy a pair off me, I’ll make you a pair. Just give me a shout and I’ll hook you up.

Look!

Old Rhino -

I like this.

Besides photos of the moon, the Natural History Museum has a lot of dioramas filled with animals that have been taxidermied.

Check out this slideshow of photos from my Natural History Museum Adventure or go browse the set on flickr and tell me which photos you like and which ones creep you out.

At one point, looking at a herd of taxidermied elephants from Asia, I realized that around 1920, a group of guys had gone to China, shot a bunch of elephants and transported them back to the states. Elephants are not small and this is in the days before semi-trucks. How did they do it? It boggles the mind.

I love the photos from the expedition to the moon at the Natural History Museum here in NYC. If you ever get a chance to go there, plan to spend at least half an hour or an hour just staring at these beautiful huge prints around the second floor of the part of the museum with the planetarium in the middle of it.

Men on the Moon

Looking at the photos, I could imagine feelings of intense excitement, utter loneliness and a fear o
